The 2010 UK Youth Parliament election Results
Many thanks for all your votes, here are the results.
Benjamin Dowling is duly elected UK Youth Parliament representative for Portsmouth. (See below for more about Ben).
Esme O’Hagen and Soraya Williams are elected as Deputy Representatives.
The reps will be working for the Young People of Portsmouth in three ways
- Locally at the Portsmouth Youth Parliament gathering the concerns and needs of other young people in your area.
They will then support these views and advocate at local meetings, etc.
- Regionally as the Portsmouth member of the UK Youth Parliament they will be required to attend Regional UKYP meetings every 6 weeks or so.
- Nationally The UK Youth Parliament representative will also attend the annual national sitting. Last Year the entire UK Youth Parliament also got to sit in the House of Commons for the day and had the debates broadcast live on the Parliament channel on TV with extensive coverage in the national media.
They will be taken to all the events they need to take part in during the year by the Participation team in the Integrated Youth Support Service.
There are also trips to fun places and residential trips both locally and nationally.
The role of the two deputies is to attend meetings nationally where the lead rep cannot attend and be involved fully at local and regional level.

Issues
The PYP conducted a consultation among the groups they represent and other youth groups in Portsmouth to find out what issues the young
people of the city would like the PYP to
focus on over the coming year.
The young people were presented with the
following list of issues and were asked to pick the top three most important to them.
CULTURE: Prices of things to do, Music venues, Clubs, U18 nights.
CRIME: Safety, Bike theft, Self defence for young people
TRANSPORT: Cycle paths, Bus prices, Pay and Go Bike system.
STEREOTYPES: Unfair view, prejudice, negative press, perception of youth.
HEALTH: Drug/alcohol, sexual health, stress,
smoking, health services.
PUBLICITY: What's out there for young people,
Notice boards, advertising events.
MONEY/JOBS: rights, raising ambitions, money management, self esteem
TOP 3 : CULTURE, HEALTH & JOBS AND MONEY
Culture Group
They have been working on producing a promotional film with the D-Day museum to encourage young people to access the museum. This was launched in April 2010 and had great feedback from veterans, young people and general public. They continue to link with city museums on other projects.
Health Group
They have written, filmed and starred in health-focused DVDs aimed at young people. They hope to have these shown in PSHE lessons as part of a health activity. They are also part of another health group which are delivering the You're Welcome scheme.
As part of the You’re
Welcome Quality Criteria Initiative, the PYP are undertaking mystery shopping
visits to various health services for young people in the city. The aim of this
initiative is to evaluate the provision that young people get from these services and get a better deal for the users.
Jobs & Money Group
The PYP group have a representative who links with the Young Money coordinator to oversee how the funds are being allocated around the city and have an influence on identifying which areas need more things to do and places to go for young people.

Ongoing projects
The PYP also have several other projects running that they hope to develop over the coming year.
Express FM Radio Show:
The PYP have gained funding for a weekly radio show tackling youth issues and providing entertainment. The shows are on Mondays at 6pm-7pm.
If you would like to be involved, have a story to tell and want to be on the radio, contact us. They are looking for positive stories about young people to broadcast. If you have an issue or topic you wish to be discussed, they would be happy to hear from you.
Increase representation:
It is important to the PYP that they are as representative as possible of the young people of Portsmouth. To this end they endeavour to develop an outreach programme to groups yet to be represented on the PYP.

2010 UK Youth Parliament Representatives
Benjamin Dowling was duly elected UK Youth Parliament representative for Portsmouth.
Esme O’Hagen and Soraya Williams are elected as Deputy Representatives.
Benjamin Dowling

I’m an ambitious person, confident in my own skills and abilities. I am a fast learner who can take in a great amount in a short amount of time
|
I take a very keen interest in my local community and the lives and welfare of the young people in Portsmouth.
I wish to stand for election because I believe I can truly put across the feelings and opinions of the majority of young people in Portsmouth.
I know I would get much out of it and like to think I have a lot to give through knowledge, experience and understanding.
There are many issues I have reservations about but some of the key concerns are levels of unemployment for young people, the cost of having an enriched life (e.g. theatre) and the ability to physically socialise outside a young person’s local area (e.g. transport). |
Esme O’Hagen

As I have lived in the city my whole life, I have a wide perspective of what 'goes on' around me. I was born in England, yet come from a mixed race family, and my parents are divorced.
I am very interested in current affairs and therefore have strong views on specific issues that affect young people.
Being in UKYP would give me the perfect opportunity to voice the opinions of young people and potentially make a change in our society. I also find politics really interesting, and therefore this role would provide great insight into the processes of government, and what a job in politics would involve, as I am hoping to work in political journalism. |
I feel that a major issue for young people in my constituency is transport pricing.
Public Transport is a necessity of teenage life, yet the prices make it almost inaccessible for many young people. Surely, the principle of public transport is to provide a suitable, environmentally sound, service to the public. Yet, the expensive ticket prices and age limits deter young people from using public transport.
I feel that being a young person in society should not mean that your views are dismissed in favour of older, more 'wise' adults. By definition , teenagers have 'a fresh pair of eyes' and they have not lived with long standing issues for decades , and are therefore potentially more creative at finding a solution as they are more likely to question established values and not tolerate the inequalities of society.
I think that young people should campaign for young person's rights and views, as we truly know what we experience and need and UKYP is the perfect tool to express these views, and make a change. |
Soraya Williams

“Vote for me remembering it’s not about me, it’s about representing you, giving the youth a voice this general election”
I am committed, determined, optimistic and friendly. Success can’t be promised every time but my dedication to do all I can to make noticeable changes can be. I have gained experience and achievements this last year in UK Youth parliament and Portsmouth Youth Parliament and want to further this work! |
I don’t want to just discuss and complain about issues, putting it on UCAS for self benefit. No, I want to take action, make a difference, and give a voice so everyone can be heard. Representing those who vote for me is important, MPs forget they are there to represent others!
I feel standardisation of age is an issue. If we are children until 18 years and have no say why should we pay adult rates for transport, etc? Political Education in schools is also important so we can understand and make a difference as less people don’t vote than vote for those elected. |
