Money
If money is stopping you from getting the best start in life, this section is for you.
Find out about what money you can get whilst at school, college or university; what benefits there are if you're unemployed; what is National Insurance & tax; what's available if you're a student with a disability; how to get help with child care; and what to do if you get into debt.
Bank Accounts
Sometimes it can be hard to get a bank account if you don't have access to your passport, birth certificate or other form of recognised identification. Portsmouth Savers is part of Hampshire Credit Union which is a not-for-profit financial institution which makes it possible for anyone aged 16 and over to apply to open an account and have their wages or benefits paid in. They recognise it isn't always possible to prove your identity so will accept other forms of identity, such as a Student /Staff ID, Notice of Tax Coding for current year, recent Utility Bill, Council Tax demand, Rent Book, Medical Card, etc. Visit their website for full details on how to apply.
Minimum Wage
With a few exceptions, all workers in the UK aged 16 or over are legally entitled to be paid a minimum amount per hour. This is regardless of the kind of work they do or the size and type of the company. The rate is reviewed every year.
The National minimum wage for 2007-2008 is £5.52 (Adult rate - workers aged 22 and over).
Development rate for 18-21 year olds is £4.60.
Development rate for 16-17 year olds is £3.40
Apprentices under the age of 19 are not entitled to the National Minimum Wage. Apprentices who are 19 or over and in the first 12 months of their apprenticeship are not entitled to the National Minimum Wage.
The rate for the accomodation offset increased to £30.10 per week (£4.30 per day).
If you’re a young person with learning difficulties or difficulties the 4US website has widget publications to download and the Trans-active website goes through a transition interview with a Connexions PA.
