Special Educational Needs
The term special educational needs is used in schools for children who experience difficulties with learning and may need some extra help. These may include a language delay or disorder, reading difficulty, emotional and behavioural problems, sight or hearing problems or physical disability. Many children experience difficulties at some point in their education. If you are concerned about your child’s progress, you should first speak to your child’s teacher. The school will have a published policy on identifying and supporting pupils with special needs and you can ask to see this. Admissions arrangements for children with statements are different and are managed by the Special Educational Needs Team. For further information please contact the Statutory Assessment Team on (023) 9284 1238 or visit the Portsmouth City Council website.
Both young learners and students with disabilities can find useful information and advice on the Skill website for students with disabilities, including information on the support you can expect in school, college and university.
For more information on your options, read the latest edition of Progress Magazine, the essential transition guide for 13 to 25 year olds with special needs.
