Support for young people with Learning Difficulties or Disabilities

Special Educational Needs

The term special educational needs is used in schools for children who experience difficulties with learning and may need some extra help. These may include a language delay or disorder, reading difficulty, emotional and behavioural problems, sight or hearing problems or physical disability. Many children experience difficulties at some point in their education. If you are concerned about your child’s progress, you should first speak to your child’s teacher. The school will have a published policy on identifying and supporting pupils with special needs and you can ask to see this. Admissions arrangements for children with statements are different and are managed by the Special Educational Needs Team. For further information please contact the Statutory Assessment Team on (023) 9284 1238 or visit the Portsmouth City Council website or Portsmouth Learning Net

If you’re a young person with learning difficulties or difficulties the 4US website has widget publications to download and the Trans-active website goes through a transition interview with a Connexions PA.

Both young learners and students with disabilities can find useful information and advice on the Skill website for students with disabilities, including information on the support you can expect in school, college and university.

Students with a disability or learning difficulty

Having a disability shouldn't be a barrier to going to university or college. Visit After 16 or Skill – websites promoting opportunities for young people and adults with any kind of disability in post-16 education, training and employment across the UK.

If you're a student, Skill is the National Bureau for Students with Disabilities which promotes opportunities for young people and adults with any kind of impairment in post-16 education, training and employment.
